Palestine General
Delegation ( PGD ) is the new name to the PLO Information Office. The new
name has been in use since 1.8.1995.
PGD is considered
an Embassy of Palestine and it represents PLO and the Palestinian National
Authority ( PNA ) according to the accreditation signed by H.E. President
Yasser Arafat, granted to Dr. Zuheir Elwazer in Helsinki.
Palestine Liberation
Organization ( PLO ) opened an information office in Helsinki, the capital
of Finland in Spring 1982, By that time Mr. Ribhi Awad was assigned as
the representative of PLO and after his termination in Finland he was replaced
by Elwazer, who arrived to Finland and took his Assignment in Spring
1984 , He has stayed in his position as Representative of PLO since then.
The positive
development in the peace process after Oslo agreement gained international
recognition of many countries to PLO, and those countries recognized PLO
and started dealing with it in an official level .
Finland was
one of those countries who decided to offer support to the Palestinian
National Authority as a contribution to support the peace efforts and to
enable the Palestinian people to rebuild their infrastructure.
| Duties of Palestine General Delegation |
The duties of the Delegation in Helsinki are not much different from other residing Embassies in Finland.
The duties in Finland are, to strengthen and deepen the friendly relations between the Palestinian and Finnish people, through many joint activities, and increasing joint co-operation in many fields between the PLO and the PNA and the Finnish government with its different organizations.
Working to find means for commercial co-operation between the companies and economical establishment of the PNA and the Finnish ones to create opportunities for Finnish investors inside Palestine in order to find work opportunities and decreasing unemployment which has reached in Gaza to 60% and in the West Bank to 35%.
Increasing visits of Palestinian delegations, governmental or non -governmental to Finland to exchange experiences and points of view important to both sides.
Provide information material about the Palestinian issue, the peace process and to facilitate facts about Palestinian people to researchers, scholars and journalists and to all who has interest in the Palestinian issue.
Caring for the Palestinian community in Finland and organizing the efforts to serve our Palestinian issue.
These duties
apply to the role of the Delegation in Latvia, Lithuania
and Estonia.
